Kos island is the motherland of Hippocrates, the famous doctor of ancient Greece and "Father" of modern medicine.
In the center of Kos town, there is a very old plane tree, known as the "Plane of Hippocrates".
One of the most prominent monuments of Ancient Greece is the "Asklepieion", a place of exceptional natural beauty, at a short distance off Kos town. The Asklepieion was the greatest health institution in the Mediterranean area in ancient times. Named after the ancient god of Medicine, Asklepeios, this important archaeological site is well-known among the members of the international medical community who, as a tribute to their Science, visit the Asklepieion to renew the Hippocratic oath.
